My day on the farm :: Week 1

Today was my first day working at Cramer Organics, our CSA farm. We purchased a CSA share from them last year, and enjoyed every bit of our weekly bounty. (My husband would say, “…except for the kohlrabi.”)

A few months ago, when they asked who would like to work one day a week in exchange for a share, I leapt at the chance. Think Horshack in Welcome Back Kotter. (I’m dating myself with that one.)

Yet I use the word “work” a bit loosely. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that farming isn’t hard work. It’s a**-kicking hard work. Farmers work way harder than you and I put together. And…they have the most important job on the planet. Don’t believe me? What if your grocery store had no fruits, vegetables, beans, meat, dairy, nuts, or grains and only those wretched “edible foodlike substances”? Then whatcha gonna do? Really. Have you thought about it?

Back to the work part. So yes, there was harvesting and post-harvest handling and cleaning, filling the CSA boxes, and weeding. So fun! When you get to get out of the city for a day, get off the damn computer, drive out to the country to an idyllic setting, work in the sun, get dirty, and smell fresh lemon basil, cilantro, onions, and peonies, it’s not work. It’s a slice of heaven. And I’m ever so thankful that I’m self-employed so that I can easily work this into my schedule.

So what’s in the box this week? Heirloom lettuce, butter lettuce, onions, cilantro, and kale. I see several salads in my very near future. And some crispy kale, of course.

Until next week…
