For years, I’ve dealt with Raynaud’s and alopecia. In both cases, I’ve been told there isn’t much you can do about either and to just live with it. My gut told me otherwise, and I’m so glad I found Jill! She helped me understand the ‘why’s’ and ‘how-to’s,’ and gave me back my confidence and self-esteem. My hair was constantly on my mind, or rather, my lack of hair and how quickly it was continuing to fall out. I came across the Healthful Elements website in one of my many searches for information that would help me with health issues (including fatigue, migraines, and brain fog) that had been impacting every area of my life for years. It is not an overstatement that working with Laine has fundamentally changed how I live in my body. I initially sought a functional nutrition coach to understand how I could support my thyroid after learning that my immune system had begun to attack it. When I asked my endocrinologist what I could do to remediate the situation, her answer was, “Nothing. Once your thyroid stops working we can give you meds.” (What!?!) I rejected the idea that I should just resign myself to a losing battle: I was tired, couldn’t lose weight even with aggressive exercise, dieting, etc., I had headaches and joint pain and just felt like all of my energy and pizazz was seeping away. I found the Healthful Elements website and read everything I could, and decided it was worth a shot to try working with a coach. I had assumed that I’d get advice on diet or supplementation to help my thyroid, etc., but what Laine provided was beyond my expectations: she gave me true support.
She listened, she took my symptoms seriously, she investigated with me the causes of the constellation of seemingly unrelated issues I was experiencing (some of which I assumed were just “how I am”) and she shared with me valuable resources (some created by her and Jill, some not) that I continue to use now, well after our coaching sessions have concluded. Most importantly, she honored my ethics and real life…she found ways to help me that didn’t require animal products/supplements (as I am a vegetarian of many years) and helped me create space for rest and healing in my life around and within my very demanding work schedule. And she cheered me on! She made the effort to really understand me, and to address my specific needs and concerns, not relying on just some kind of “standard protocol” but really considering my health and life holistically. I had already done a lot of research before I met Laine, and understanding that, she helped me deepen my understanding of thyroid and hormonal health. Now some months after our time together, I am confidently in charge of my health. Laine helped me understand that it takes time to heal and balance my hormones, but the results are profound. That client perspective, alongside the “quick wins” that she helped me achieve (no more sinus headaches! breathing better! energy returning!) and a focus on true whole-self care has made this work a thoroughly positive and encouraging process. Before meeting and working with Jill, my daughter’s alopecia was overwhelming for me. It gave me horrible anxiety, and the different doctors, dermatologists, and hair specialist were unable to help. They knew nothing about it and don’t do any research on it. Jill was patient and kind, as this was all new to me and I had a million questions – some over and over. After working with Jill for 3 months, Natalie’s hair is growing back in, she has more energy, and the whole family feels GREAT because we’ve done the program with Natalie! I had always had a thick head of healthy hair, but started losing a great deal of hair a couple of years ago. I was also “barely” hypothyroid and didn’t have any other thyroid symptoms, so I knew my hair loss was due to something else. I tried everything, any supplement I heard of that could possibly help with my hair loss. Eventually, I was diagnosed with diffuse alopecia, which made sense, given my other autoimmunity (psoriasis). I was told that cortisone wasn’t an option for me, which I didn’t want to try anyway. Everything that Jill said about the immune system and hair follicle made complete sense and I knew I’d found the right person to help me. I really thought I was going bald and starting thinking about what style of wig I would wear. Within a month of starting with Jill, I was losing so much less hair. It was so comforting. Then, I started growing hair. Not only do I feel like this situation has totally healed and stabilized, but also the texture of my hair is so much better, better than it’s been for years. I’m finally getting my hair back and I know what to do to keep this from happening again, God forbid. I’d happily share a photo, but I never had any bald spots, so in photos, I look like someone with a pretty normal head of hair. No one would know I have alopecia. If you have alopecia, I simply can’t recommend Jill highly enough. My work with her has been life changing.
My daughter Holly had just turned 7 when she was diagnosed with alopecia. I took her to numerous doctors over the next year or so, getting second opinions and looking for something that would cure her alopecia. The dermatologist could only recommend steroid injections, which we tried but the re-grown hair eventually fell out again. These injections were very painful and sore afterwards, so I felt badly for Holly, having to go through this. I didn’t feel it was right for her. We went to see naturopaths as well and by this stage Holly was so sick of going to appointments. Luckily, I came across Jill’s website and contacted her. She was very caring and positive. Jill has such a great knowledge on autoimmunity in general but knew so much about alopecia. It was so reassuring to talk with her. I started looking for holistic help when diagnosed with low thyroid and Hashimoto’s in the fall of 2015 and was feeling very fatigued. I did not want to take the prescribed medication, as it has side effects, so my search led me to find Healthful Elements. I found Jill and Healthful Elements one evening while I was on the web searching desperately for answers that would alleviate my then-debilitating physical symptoms which included a slow thyroid, extreme exhaustion which did not go away by sleeping or taking days of rest, mind fog, intestinal problems, joint pain, muscle pain, and a constant feeling of inner restlessness. Since working with Jill, I’ve been able to decrease my thyroid medication. I’m currently on the lowest dosage, and I’m feeling great! I also came to Jill with major sleep issues and amenorrhea – I hadn’t had a period in over a year. After following her advice, I’m sleeping like a champ, and I just had a period! Working with Jill at Healthful Elements has been one of the best decisions I have ever made for taking care of myself…the wife, the mother, the daughter, the sister, the manager of the home, the professional photographer. We all tend to give so much of ourselves away to those we love, but rarely do we take the time to invest in ourselves. I started working with Jill after years of frustration. I had been gaining weight and and feeling increasingly exhausted. After seeing several doctors who put me on hormones, thyroid meds, and a variety of weird diets, I was still stuck in the exact same place. From the very first day, Jill began solving this puzzle. Six months ago, I had reached my peak weight at 198 lbs. (I’m 5’7”). I felt bloated, slept poorly, experienced a daily afternoon “crash,” had frequent mood swings, suffered from severe allergies that required two daily medications, experienced eczema flare-ups, had asthma that required an albuterol inhaler at least three times daily, had frequent heartburn, irregular periods, and was generally feeling bad. Jill, I just wanted to touch base with you to let you know that I recently saw Dr. Susan Haddow, who rechecked my blood work…and ALL of my thyroid test came back NORMAL! Even my AntithyroAB, which was 75.8 last July, is now 1.1! TSH, T3 Free, T4 Free, TPO are all well within the normal range. Hashimoto’s remission? Whatever it is, I’ll take it. I am still very gluten free, etc. I just wanted to let you know that all of the information you provided has really paid off. Thanks again for all of your help! I thought I knew how to be active and eat in a way that would ensure good health my entire life, but I started to notice that my “tried and true” approach to a healthy life was not having the same results as before. I didn’t think I needed be transformed, but after working with Jill, I’ve found my perspective on food, exercise, and how I interact with my environment has (italicized) been transformed. And without a punishing regimen that makes you feel guilty or is not sustainable in the long term. This has been a delicious and pleasant journey to weight loss, elimination of allergies, deep and rejuvenating sleep, and an overall sense of calm and confidence. I had been diagnosed with PCOS and a low thyroid several years ago, but I knew deep down that there was more wrong than that. I started working with Jill after I read her article on hypothyroidism in the Experience Life magazine. In the article she wrote that it was possible to control hypothyroidism with diet and lifestyle changes. I had been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and was looking for ways to improve my symptoms without increasing the dose of my medication, the effects of which were already fading. Every doctor I saw recommended I increase my dosage of Levothyroxine but I was reluctant to do so. I worked with Jill for two months and the results were stunning: my TSH dropped to normal and my antibodies were lowered to near remission. As a veteran of many alternative health therapies and a person who pays a fair amount of attention to nutrition and exercise, I was skeptical about working with a nutrition coach. When I learned I had Hashimoto’s, I was told there was really nothing I could do about it. I felt a bit depressed by this news, until I started working with Jill. She let me know that it was possible, through a number of healthy diet and lifestyle changes, to control the condition very successfully. Most healthcare providers do not have the in-depth level of knowledge that Jill has about Hashimoto’s, so it was a real relief to find her. I found Jill online after discovering that I have a nodule (thankfully benign) that took up the left lobe of my thyroid. Dear Jill, I bought your homestudy course few weeks ago. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s more than four years ago. After being on medication for two years, I had lost my hair and had gained so much weight and I could not walk up ten steps. I stopped going to my endocrinologist and started a gluten free diet. By just doing that, I got my hair and my dignity back and stabilized my weight. Yesterday, I read the last page of your home study and tears of joy started coming down. Louise Hay has been my dear friend since the late eighties and you and she are back to let me know that I am not the only one who has gone through it all. This is my story too. Changing breakfast was one of the best things that I have done for myself and now my husband too. I have lost about 5 pounds mostly in stomach area. After working with Jill to get a handle on my blood sugar, work on my fertility challenges, and figure out why I was so tired and feeling crappy, all of which improved greatly during my program with her, I was inspired to take control of my infertility situation, which for me, meant getting over my fears and just doing IVF already. It worked the first time (yay!), and my son was born in June of 2012. I had a completely healthy and easy pregnancy and labor (I exercised up to the day that I started labor), and I credit much of that to what I learned from Jill. I’m a vegetarian who eats seafood and dairy products, and wanted to evaluate my health and make sure I was getting enough protein. Although I was skeptical about what kind of difference the consultations could make (I considered myself a really healthy eater), working with Jill made a BIG difference in my energy level throughout the day. She gave me some totally new ideas that helped me experiment with my eating habits. Though not a vegetarian herself, she understood my motivation behind my food choices and was flexible rather than dogmatic in her suggestions. She shared a lot of resources as well - recipes, short readings, etc. I feel more informed about how to get enough protein as a vegetarian, and I have a couple more tools in my toolbox for maintaining high energy levels and generally good health. By nature I am a happy, positive person. After the birth of my son, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. Why me? Two years later, I had a cold which turned into bronchitis followed by pneumonia. I had struggled for years with… just not feeling good. Even though I ate pretty well, I was fatigued, was gaining what seemed to be unwarranted weight, was sometimes achy, was getting really forgetful, and had lost half my hair.
