Are You Fed Up?

This post is an installment in our 52 Health Hinges series. Remember, “Small hinges swing big doors.”

Quitting sugar is difficult. As we discussed last week, sugar is everywhere. This week, I’m going to let you off the hook…

It’s not your fault. Sugar is addictive, and it’s been put into processed food to keep you addicted.

Per this New York Times article, “… people can’t resist [sugar]. And the reason for that is pretty simple. Sugar is addictive. And we don’t mean addictive in that way that people talk about delicious foods. We mean addictive, literally, in the same way as drugs. And the food industry is doing everything it can to keep us hooked.”

It continues, “A comparison to drugs would not be misplaced here. Similar refinement processes transform other plants like poppies and coca into heroin and cocaine. Refined sugars also affect people’s bodies and brains. Sugar stimulates brain pathways just as an opioid would.”

I know you’ve tried to cut back. You eat less, exercise more, and nothing changes. This is because you’ve been confused by what the government and food marketing campaigns are putting in front of you.

I believe that you’ll be more successful reducing your sugar intake if you understand more about what it does to your body and why it’s got a hold on you.

This week, to help arm you with more information, I’d like to recommend that you watch the movie, Fed Up. Narrated by Katie Couric, Fed Up is a game-changer. Watch it and let me know if you learn anything new and surprising – I sure did!
